Cambodia is one of the oldest countries in SE Asia with a long and rich history and is also known as Kampuchea or Khmer. Officially it is the Kingdom of Cambodia and the official language is Khmer. Our capital is Phnom Penh. Buddhism is the official religion and our currency is Riel (KHR). Calls to Cambodia need the country code +855. If you find our names confusing, just remember – the first name is our family name and the second name is our given name. USD currency is acceptable everywhere and in most places prices are set in USD. Generally, old or torn dollar notes will not be accepted. Cambodia’s culture is very modest and while you are here it is polite to respect our dress codes when visiting temples and Buddhist centres. Neighbouring Cambodia is Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, with the ocean towards the south. Cambodia has two main seasons – dry and rainy. Dry season is from November to April and rainy season starts from May through to October. Rainy season is very green with lush rice paddies which turn yellow when ready for harvest. December/January are normally the cooler months. If visiting Cambodia between October to April, booking your tours at least one month in advance is highly recommended as hotels and tours can be fully booked during this high season, especially if it’s one of the major holidays shown below.
