Siem Reap
Easy, Leisure
The unique aspect of the Beng Mealea cycling tour lies in exploring a massive, largely unrestored “jungle temple” ruins while enjoying a scenic, off-the-beaten-path ride through rural Cambodian villages, rice paddies, and countryside. Unlike crowded Angkor sites, this tour offers a serene, adventurous experience, often involving climbing over rubble in a “lost city” setting.
Beng Mealea is a largely unrestored, isolated temple complex, acting as a solitary, massive “jungle-covered” ruin. While it is part of the broader 1000+ temple landscape of Siem Reap province, it well-known, or maintained temples immediately surrounding it. Beng Mealea has a few temples around as Prasat Chrei, Prasat Kong Phluk and Prasat Kep Chen.
Please review the Beng Mealea Cylcing Tour
Beng Mealea is unique as a largely unrestored, "jungle temple" that offers a raw, Indiana Jones-style experience, with its 12th-century ruins overgrown by vines and trees. Unlike popular sites, it remains in a chaotic, collapsed state, providing a truly wild atmosphere where visitors can climb over rubble and explore hidden, vine-covered galleries in relative solitude.
Prasat Chrei (or Chrey), located just over 1 km from Beng Mealea, is a unique, rarely visited 12th-century sandstone "temple d'étape" (waypoint) on the ancient Royal Road, featuring a distinctive, nearly collapsed, and overgrown atmosphere. It is unique for its atypical, un-restored state compared to more famous sites.
Prasat Kong Phluk (also known as Kong Pluk) is a highly unusual temple located at the southeast corner of the Beng Mealea baray.
Kap Chen Temple (or Prasat Kap Chen), located southwest of the main Beng Mealea temple complex, is unique for its mostly unexcavated state, featuring a partially standing sandstone tower, scattered rubble, and early decorative carvings still in situ. It represents an intimate, overgrown ruin site near the major, more accessible Beng Mealea, providing a glimpse into the surrounding, less-visited satellite structures of the area.
